You received an IRS letter. Do this first.

Do not ignore the date at the top. Do not pay a number you do not understand. And do not call the number on the letter in a panic without the notice in front of you.

First hour

Photograph every page. Note the notice number (CP2000, LT11, and the rest). Put the deadline on a calendar with three extra days of margin. Then send it to us — or sit down with a transcript pull before you write a check.

A letter is a conversation the agency already started. Answer it on paper, not from memory.

If a levy or lien is threatened, that is a different clock. Call the same day.
